Oh, the joys of "FREE" stuff. A good friend of ours was moving back to Missouri
and gave us an old bedroom set for the lake house, two night stands, dresser, and a two piece tall dresser unit. Sadly on the way from Houston to Corsicana the top drawer decided to take a suicide dive from the truck to the highway. No cars were injured during this, but the drawer was dead.
I decided I wanted to turn the bottom of the unit into an electronic charging station.
Here is the before. I removed the gold handles and gave the unit a good sanding and cleaning. Make sure to remove all the sanding dust before painting.
I then selected an antique green. (Behr Witch Hazel) Home Depot is just down the street. We were in Corsicana at the time.I am a Sherwin Williams fan, with good reason. Since the purchase of this lake house I have now used Valspar (NEVER again) and Behr. In a pinch I would use the Behr again, but
honestly Sherwin Williams is the best, worth every penny. If you wait until the quarterly
sales you can get it 40% off, making them very competitive with the others. Ask the pros what brand they like to use, they paint all day they know the difference. I have a contractors account so I don't have to wait. (No I don't have any endorsements with SW) I then spray painted the gold handles black. (home depot) I wanted to change them out, but the holes were 2 inches apart, and I had already painted the unit and didn't want to sand the drawers, fill the holes and repaint. Not to mention the unit was free and handles are pricey, so I decided no new handles. I love this color, just not up against the tan walls. I was at the store when I picked it. Now you see why I suggest taping color swatches to the wall, before you select the color.
I have always paint furniture with trim enamel, it is a one step process, no need to poly
the unit. Dry time does take a little longer, but the no second step makes up for that.
I always prime the unit first. (this is a must no matter what paint you are using) I then will
add Flood Floetrol to the paint. Flood is a paint extender it allows the paint to dry slower- which allows the paint to level as it dries. You'll get less drag or brush marks. When painting only go one direction. NEVER drag the brush across the surface in the opposite direction. The difference between a custom look and an amateur is the brush marks. Follow the one direction rule with the primer as well. I'll post an up close of this Behr paint against a Sherwin Williams piece so you can judge for yourself. I'll post the top drawer conversion. And my Valspar nightmare (baby dresser).
Happy Painting
